The ICTINEU 3 is already a reality, help us to put it at the service of science

VIDEO with subtitles in English We have finished the construction of the scientific submarine ICTINEU 3, to visit the ocean deep and three crew members, one of the most modern and efficient in the world. We’ve done the testing workshop, swimming pool and port, and have been a success. The ICTINEU 3 is already a fully operational submarine, the 2nd submarine for more depth of the European Union and the 9th in the world. But we lack a last step before putting it in the service of the international scientific community. We ask that we try to give another helping hand. We need between 60,000 and 100,000€, a figure that will allow us to preserve the ICTINEU 3, finish the last sea tests, to provide it with the necessary scientific equipment and get the final classification and certification so that you can start working. With this milestone we will culminate 10 years of R + D + i and we will ensure the aim of the project: that the international scientific community has a new vehicle to explore and investigate the seabed and the ICTINEU 3 becomes a unique tool in the service of science and society, for the benefit of humanity. So far it has only been explored between 2% and 5% of all the seas and oceans and will know much better the surface of the planet Mars that the bottom of the sea. Only extending this knowledge we can take care of our sea and make it a most optimal and respectful use and management. The ICTINEU 3 is the first Catalan submarine from both Ictineus of Narcís Monturiol, built in 1859 and 1864. Like its predecessors is an example of innovation and design and a cause for national pride, since 100% of the design and engineering have been made in Catalonia. It is a technologically innovative solutions that brings and pointer submarine the underwater technology, such as new building materials, automation, and energy systems pioneers worldwide. It is designed to dive to a maximum depth of 1,200 m and can carry a pilot and two passengers. Now that it is operational, it has turned in the ninth submarine for more depth in the world. Only the major powers can go below (China, Japan, France, Russia, USA).


The ICTINEU 3 was born with the vocation of public service, as a tool in the service of knowledge and management of our seas and oceans. By their capabilities can work for the entire continental shelf and is able to reach 50% of the funds of the Mediterranean. This is a great drive for science because until now has only been explored between 2% and 5% of all the seas and oceans of the planet. Remember that at present it is known much more the surface of the planet Mars as the planet Earth. As the experts warn, it is necessary the construction of a large number of underwater vehicles to reach the same level of knowledge, and to avoid that will lose a lot of spices before being known. The ICTINEU 3 brings on board scientific instruments and data obtained will be placed at the disposal of the scientific community and oceanographic. The submarine is the ideal tool for the study and conservation of the submerged archaeological heritage. The bottom of the sea is still the great Museum of mankind; the ICTINEU 3 can help us to recover a part of our history and to better understand our heritage and maritime past. If you know more our sea we can better care and management and use more optimal and respectful. The construction of the ICTINEU 3 is the result of almost ten years of work and has been promoted from the Catalan Centre for Underwater Research Institute and from Ictineu company Ictineu Submarines SL. This project has been able to grow in part thanks to the unpaid contributions of many people. From volunteers who have contributed their work, to capital contributions, partnerships and sponsorships, in-kind giving everyone their grain of sand, to the extent of its possibilities. “There is also a fundamental importance had micropatronage. More than 1,700 people have made direct contributions to make it possible for the set up of the submarine either through Verkami or in successive campaigns started in the web of ictineu http://www.ictineu.net. In the design and construction of the submarine participated in the many suppliers and engineering companies in Catalonia, and more than thirty students, who have had all of them the opportunity to get to know and enter a new sector with high added value: the underwater technology. We are confident that this project will boost this sector and will make in the next few years will create skilled jobs, knowledge and wealth for the country.


We have incorporated a pioneering system of underwater batteries of lithium-ion-polymer, developed by our team of engineers, and a powerful and efficient propulsion system that will allow a unique ability to scrollgreat distancesat great depths. We’ve got to innovate in materials, design and calculation of the pressure vessel, and we have incorporated for the first time the composite materials in structures, including State of the art materials. In this way the submarine is very light and much more than the rest of operating existing submarines. We have introduced, with respect to other submarines, improvements in ergonomics, design and comfort, providing at the same time aesthetics and security.


Observation, research and studies of the marine environment: • Underwater Archaeology (documentation, inventory, recovery, management of cultural heritage). • Collect samples to extract new active ingredients that cure diseases until now incurable. • Oceanography, geology, marine biology (observation, sampling, data collection with sensors). • Research of marine ecosystems. Dives of work: • Underwater Work: review of conduits, cables, platforms, discography. • Immersions for prevention and management of emergencies and natural disasters, management of heritage. • Prevention of ecological risks. • Monitoring and evaluation of ecological disasters. • Monitoring and evaluation of activities related to illegal and/or harmful to the seabed, especially in protected areas. • Control of the environmental quality of the coast. Tourist activities and dissemination • Films for the dissemination of Mediterranean flora and fauna.


In the last two editions of the Congress sector reference Underwater Intervention, the ICTINEU 3 received the flattery of the experts of the sector, as usual in the international arena, both for its technical characteristics and its design. As well, the Chief Engineer of the American submarine Deepsea Chalenger showed his admiration for our submarine. The Deepsea Chalenger has been built by the famous film director James Cameron, creator of Abyss and Titanic, among other successful films, with what he himself has fallen to 10.898 m deep. On several occasions the team of the ICTINEU 3 has been invited to visit and collaborate with leading research centers and international prestige, such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (USA) and IFREMER (France). Recently, the French centre (Ifremer, Institut Français de Recherche pour several months de la Mer) has shown a strong interest in lithium-ion-polymer batteries that we have developed, and is already working on collaboration to qualify these batteries for its new vehicles of 3000 m and 6000m. The head of the Department of underwater systems, Vincent 18, has said of us that we are “the representatives of a new generation of underwater technology,” and his chief engineer responsible for the design of the submarine NAUTILE, Jean François Drogou, States that we are “the team which is most advanced in the world” in reference to the underwater lithium-ion batteries. Recently the ICTINEU 3 has been visited by people in charge of different International Oceanographic centres such as Japanese JAMSTEC, French IFREMER. The director of Stanley underwater that he worked in the campaign of Verkami of 2013 and visited the ICTINEU 3, stated that in the design of submarines, in the world there will be a before and after of the ICTINEU 3. The project has been recognized as a project of R + D + i by the different administrations and organs research managers, both in Spain and in Catalonia. However, public funding has never been enough to carry out an ambitious project of this scope. The recognition of the project in the national and international press has been broad and abundant with more than 300 news in six years, that is to say, an average of news per week.
